The number of people killed in car crashes dropped nationally and in New Jersey in early 2023 after post-pandemic spikes.
in New Jersey and across the nation starting in 2020, safety officials reported the number of people killed in crashes dropped during the first part of 2023.when compared to 9,645 estimated fatalities during the same time in 2022, National Highway Traffic Safety officials said Wednesday.
“The decrease in NJ fatalities is certainly a step in the right direction, but by no means is cause to celebrate, especially as we enter the summer driving season,” she said. “As travel ramps up and as more families are on the move, it is time to be more vigilant, not less, despite the current drop in traffic fatalities.”
She cited significant actions taken to reduce traffic fatalities, including moving on new vehicle standards to make cars safer, investing in infrastructure and roadway safety improvements, and working with states and municipalities on driver safety efforts. “While they sometimes may not think so, parents remain the best line of defense to keep everyone safe behind the wheel,” Noble said. “It’s never too soon for parents to talk to their kids about the dangers of distracted driving, speeding, and alcohol and marijuana impairment. But they also need to model good driving behavior themselves.”
