Texas is moving onto the Elite Eight for the 16th time in 17 seasons.
AUSTIN — Before longtime Texas coach Jerritt Elliott arrived at Gregory Gym for Thursday’s NCAA Tournament regional semifinals match against No. 16 Marquette, he confessed a not-so-secret fear to his wife.
The Longhorns beat fourth-seeded Marquette , 25-14, 25-13, 19-25, 25-17, in front of 4,491 fans to advance to Saturday’s 5 p.m. regional final against No. 10 Ohio State. The Buckeyes downed No. 8 Minnesota 3-1 in Thursday's early game to advance to the Elite Eight. Marquette came out as the aggressor with its season on the line in the third set. Taking advantage of some rare errors and mishits by Texas, the Golden Eagles surged to a 13-6 advantage and won 25-19, becoming the first team to take a set from the Longhorns in the NCAA Tournament.
Eggleston opened the fourth and final set with two booming kills. Marquette steadied itself and pulled within one, down 4-3 with hope still lingering. Then Texas really turned it on.
