In his farewell speech, U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey told Republicans that the party is 'much bigger' than one man, a veiled reference to former President Donald Trump, and advised that the filibuster protects government from policy swings.

U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey said good-bye to the Senate on Thursday and told his colleagues to keep the filibuster while telling Republicans the party is “much bigger” than one man.

Toomey used his 22-minute address to extoll the virtues of “personal freedom,” saying that, “Economic freedom is a fundamental aspect of personal freedom.” A former president of the anti-tax Club for Growth, Toomey, said the tax cuts law, signed by former President Donald Trump, led to low unemployment, rising wages and increased federal revenue.

At the same time, Toomey warned Republicans that “our party can’t be about or beholden to one man,” a clear reference to Trump, who Toomey supported but voted to impeach after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol by those following Trump’s call to fight the 2020 election results.“It’s the only mechanism that forces bipartisan consensus,” he said. “It prevents government, governance, from the extremes.
