Tomlinson: Here's how much taxpayers could save if Texas helped the public stay healthy

Such programs help the child and her parents better understand asthma, look for mold in the home and supply allergy-free bedding. The children suffered asthma symptoms 21 fewer days a year and missed 12 fewer school days. A Tennessee program reduced each child’s medical costs by $2,207 over three years.

Data collected from impoverished older people enrolled in Medicare and Medicaid shows savings of $220 per month per person. While private insurance often pays for such programs, Texas Medicaid’s nutrition programs are meager.
