“I looked at [Ike] and thought, ‘You just beat me for the last time, you sucker,’” she recalled.
The former Ramada is now the Lorenzo Hotel. Al DeBerry, managing director of the Lorenzo, says the building was gutted and renovated in 2006 after changing hands. But to this day, there is a large portrait of Turner in the lobby. “This was her cultural, iconic moment to escape from a life of abuse and torment, under Ike Turner’s hand,” DeBerry says.
