House lawmakers questioned TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew about potential Chinese government influence over the company, as safety and security concerns over the Chinese-controlled app deepen
WASHINGTON—House lawmakers on Thursday sharply questioned TikTok Chief Executive Shou Zi Chew about potential Chinese government influence over the company, as safety and security concerns over the Chinese-controlled popularity deepen even as its popularity in the U.S. grows.
The committee’s chair, Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers opened the hearing by asking Mr. Chew to state “with 100% certainty” that the Chinese government couldn’t use TikTok or its parent company, ByteDance Ltd., to surveil Americans or manipulate the content Americans see.
