Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi revealed Chris Hemsworth's Thor's Loki tribute tattoo was initially supposed to appear in Thor: Ragnarok. The latest phase 4 movie saw Waititi and Hemsworth reunite for the first time since the 2017 movie. Thor: Love and Thunder was released on July 8th, 2022.
In Thor: Love and Thunder, Thor, Jane Foster , Valkyrie , and Korg travel to Omnipotent City for aid when Gorr the God-Butcher abducts the children of New Asgard. Donning disguises, the group seeks an audience with Zeus in hopes of raising an army to face Gorr. After singling out and summoning Thor to the stage, Zeus uses his powers to strip Thor of his disguise, only to flick too hard and strip the God of Thunder of his entire outfit.
"It was a comedy bit that was supposed to be in"Ragnarok." When Loki faked his death and he's reunited with Thor and Thor can't believe he's alive, he was to say,"I mourned you, look I even got this stupid tattoo," and Thor lifts his sleeve and it's a tattoo that says"RIP Loki." For some reason it didn't make it into the film, but I was determined to get it into this one so I doubled down and put it on his back.
Hemsworth addressed Loki's absence from Love and Thunder, despite Hiddleston's God of Mischief technically being alive and a crucial part of the ongoing narrative of the MCU through the Loki Disney+ series. In a Q&A session ahead of the film's release, Hemsworth revealed that he would have felt Loki's inclusion in Love and Thunder could have made the film lean too heavily into comedy, with Waititi agreeing.
While the reveal of Thor's Loki tattoo tribute came in a scene that is sure to take audiences by surprise, the tattoo has touched fans' hearts as an extra layer to Thor's grief. While it is easy to picture how Waititi may have used the idea in the Thor: Ragnarok scene, its reuse allows the tribute to have more emotional depth.
