ThorLoveAndThunder director Taika Waititi has hyped up Christian Bale's Gorr the God Butcher in a big way.👀 “In my humble opinion, we have probably the best villain that Marvel’s ever had in Christian Bale.”
Thor: Love and Thunder writer and director Taika Waititi praises Christian Bale’s Gorr as probably Marvel’s best villain yet. After reinvigorating the Thor franchise with 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, Waititi’s follow-up, Love and Thunder, is set to be released in theaters on July 8th.
Bale has made a reputation for being one of Hollywood’s most transformative and acclaimed actors after roles in films like The Machinist, American Psycho, American Hustle, and The Fighter — the latter of which won him an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. After packing on the muscle for Warner Bros./DC Films’ Batman Begins, Bale became a generation’s Bruce Wayne in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy.
“It’s a great, really fun, weird little group of heroes, a new team for Thor with Korg, Valkyrie, and The Mighty Thor. And, in my humble opinion, we have probably the best villain that Marvel’s ever had in Christian Bale.” Outside of leaked designs, action figures, and set photos, audiences have yet to get a glimpse of Bale’s character. Love and Thunder’s first teaser trailer largely focused on Thor’s midlife crisis and search for purpose while featuring the “Asgardians of the Galaxy,” Zeus in Olympus, and Jane Foster wielding Mjolnir as the Mighty Thor in its final moments.
In the comics, Gorr blames the gods for the death of his family and becomes hell bent on annihilating all deities. It seems likely Love and Thunder will adhere to this backstory, with the trailer already featuring the corpse of Falligar the Behemoth in a frame reminiscent of a panel in the God Butcher arc of the Thor: God of Thunder run by Jason Aaron.
