Hours after thousands of men belonging to the Ku Klux Klan gathered in the prairie near Bellaire, Houston Mayor Oscar Holcombe said any city officer who took part in the event would be fired.

The move followed a broader investigation by the city into whether any members of the force were members of the organization.

On Dec. 11, 1921, the Houston Post published photos and a first-hand account from a Bellaire resident who witnessed the mass meeting. The resident estimated the attendance that night to be about 8,000. "I do not favor the Klan," the resident, who was unidentified, wrote."I am opposed to them for many things, but I want to say that any one who makes the statement that the Klan is dead in Houston or Harris county is the most mistaken man in this world."

notes that just over 2,000 people took the oath and joined the Klan that night. Reporters from the Post were invited to watch it unfold, but the same could not be said for reporters from the Chronicle, which was anti-Klan.
