The venerable chopped beef version features salt-and-pepper-crusted chunks of brisket with the slightest glaze of barbecue sauce, topped with cheddar cheese, sour cream and salsa roja.
One of my favorite tacos in Houston is the third option: smoked-and-shredded chicken covered in a melty pepper-jack-style cheese and tender, charred cloves of garlic. If I’m looking for tacos on a Tuesday , a couple of solid options are the barbacoa tacos at Tejas Chocolate + Barbecue in Tomball and the classic smoked brisket taco at Henderson & Kane in Sixth Ward.
I’ll find where JQ’s Tex Mex BBQ is posted up and dig into a couple of the brisket birria tacos. Shredded brisket is stewed in a Tex-Mex chile sauce and piled on a fried corn tortilla with melted Mexican cheese and served with a side of fragrant and spicy consommé . It’s all cooked in front of you on a sizzling griddle. That’s $12 well spent.
