Instead, another heavyweight fell apart on Wednesday as Germany coughed up a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1 to Japan—precisely what Argentina did in its defeat to Saudi Arabia just 27 hours earlier. Germany hadn’t dropped a World Cup game after taking the lead since losing to Bulgaria at Giants Stadium in New Jersey back in 1994.
