Rep. Andy Kim is an effective and thoughtful member of Congress. His Republican challenger is an unqualified neophyte.
Hours after the Jan. 6 mob ransacked the Capitol, Rep. Andy Kim walked to the Rotunda, got down on his knees, and began filling bags with the trash rioters left behind.
But he’s willing to buck his party’s leadership on matters of principle, as he did when he sponsored a bill to ban stock trading by members of Congress, in“I disagree strongly,” Kim tweeted about Pelosi’s anemic defense of the practice. “Americans are losing trust in government, and we need to show we serve the people, not our personal/political self-interest.”
On foreign policy, Kim is thoughtful, not sloganeering. He flew with Pelosi on her visit to Taiwan in August, a trip that provoked threatening Chinese military exercises. But Kim felt it was important to signal our solidarity with democratic Taiwan in the face of China’s growing belligerence. At the same time, he worries that some in Congress have become too belligerent towards China, raising the risk of a second Cold War.
“We were there for 20 years,” Kim says. “It was a failure for our country, across four presidencies, two from each party. Certainly, I was upset and frustrated about the execution of the evacuation, but this was debacle to start with, across the board.” Instead, Healey spews talking points from Fox News about socialism and defunding the police in advertisements and e-mail blasts, as if Kim ever supported either idea. And Healey turns down every invitation to discuss the issues in greater depth -- even those where Republicans have an edge, like crime and inflation. He is light as a feather.
