We spoke with ThePersianVersion writer and director Maryam Keshavarz (marakeshfilms) at Sundance about putting her personal touch on the American immigrant story and crafting a film with a crew that felt like a family:

The Persian Version has become the feel-good favorite of the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, having just taken home two awards and received another nomination. Written and directed by Maryam Keshavarz, The Persian Version tells the partially true story of her family's experience both in Iran and the United States. Protagonist Leila , introduces her impossible-to-believe present-day situation before guiding the audience through various phases of her family history.

Maryam Keshavarz: Honestly, I started during the Trump era. It's a terrifying process of writing by yourself and wanting it to be comedy, but also dealing with so many different characters. How do you harness the story to be a film, and not just a 200-page script with a lot of people? It seemed like the right time when I did it, in terms of wanting to have a film, that combatted all of these xenophobic ideas that were being floated around.

How did you make the decision of dividing the story up into different decades, and how do you approach the visuals and production design of each time period? Maryam Keshavarz: It's a big cast, and most actors are cast at two different ages. I cast all the adults first, and then the younger versions of themselves. I was looking for different things for Leila; someone who's funny and has good comedic timing, because she's so sarcastic, yet who is vulnerable and not unlikable. And Niousha Noor, who plays the mother Shirin, spent so many decades as the character.

I know you've faced plenty of adversity in your journey as a filmmaker, both in and out of Iran. Can you talk about what you learned from Circumstance, and what you put into The Persian Version from that?
