Twiga, believed to be the oldest giraffe in captivity, died Saturday at Texas' Ellen Trout Zoo. She was 31 years old.
LUFKIN, Texas — The staff at Ellen Trout Zoo has heavy hearts as they say goodbye to Twiga, their female Maasai giraffe, who died Saturday night.
The Los Angeles native, born at the Los Angeles Zoo, was 31 years old, making her the olden living giraffe in captivity. Giraffes typically have a lifespan of about 25 years. Twiga came to Texas in 2008, when she was then placed at the Ellen Trout Zoo from the Racine Zoo in Wisconsin.“Twiga helped our other two giraffes, Kellen and Luna, feel comfortable in their new home in Lufkin,” Zoo Director Gordon Henley said. “She will be greatly missed.”
