Exclusive: Showrunner Shawn Ryan discusses the casting of Gabriel Basso in TheNightAgent, and the beard that nearly cost the star this job:
The Night Agent features a number of strong actors in some of their largest roles yet, but one nearly lost the opportunity thanks to his facial hair. Created by Shawn Ryan , The Night Agent tells the story of a low-level FBI agent and a young tech CEO that become embroiled in a deadly plot that reaches the highest levels of the United States government. The Night Agent is based on a book of the same name by New York Times bestselling author Matthew Quirk.
Gabriel came very late in the process. [In] his first audition, he had this big bushy beard, which really threw me off. I was like, "Well, this doesn't look like an FBI agent," and the whole sort of thing. You're forced to watch like 50-60 auditions a day, and so you're kind of scanning through quickly, and I kind of initially dismissed it just based on the look being wrong.
The Night Agent Proves Shawn Ryan's Eye For Casting Luckily, Basso made the cut, which ultimately facilitated the casting of the fantastic Luciane Buchanan as well. The strength of both actors points to the eye for casting that Shawn Ryan has always had across his projects. A number of big-name actors were in The Shield, some of which were in the early stages of their careers, and the trend continued with S.W.A.T.
