Some farmers are turning to alternative methods, like rebuilding their topsoil. Sachel Sánchez, a pistachio farmer in Delicias, is planting less water-intensive crops like asparagus and experimenting with adding compost around her trees. CompostChihuahua’s Director of Rural Development, Salvador Alcantar, gave insight into Mexico’s water wars. A farmer himself, Alcantar believes it is not too late to correct course.
The treaty we have in place does work, and farmers across both sides of the border can benefit from its shared resources. But the Mexican government must involve farmers to distribute water fairly.
