One Phase 4 hero's backstory in the MCU could provide the perfect answer to Marvel Studios' forgotten Extremis mystery from 2013's Iron Man 3.
One new hero introduced in the MCU's Phase 4 could provide the best solution to a major mystery that started in 2013's Iron Man 3. In the wake of The Avengers, Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark saw his final solo project in the MCU with Iron Man 3, pitting him against an enemy that he himself had inadvertently created over a decade earlier.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Black Panther: Wakanda Forever concluded Phase 4 by bringing MCU audiences back to Wakanda, but Ryan Coogler's 2022 sequel also introduced Tony Stark's exciting legacy hero to the franchise. Dominique Thorne debuted as Riri Williams, a.k.a. Ironheart, a young MIT student who had spent time prior to her appearance in Wakanda Forever developing her own Iron Man-esque armor.
Riri Williams' Armor Arc Showed How Iron Man 3's Extremis Mystery Can Be Explained By the time Riri Williams was introduced in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, she had already been working on her Ironheart designs, and had even pulled together stolen pieces of Stark technology to create her first suit. This backstory wasn't extensively shown, but only hinted at during Shuri and Okoye's first meeting with Riri.
Why Iron Man 3's Extremis Mystery Doesn't Have To Be Solved In An Iron Man Series Extremis was a major plot point in 2013's Iron Man 3, and although it hasn't really been mentioned since then, Phase 4 did see a brief return of the volatile solution. One scene in Phase 4's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings included several MCU Easter eggs, as Shang-Chi and Katy find themselves in Xialing's fight club in Macau.
The fact that Extremis showed up in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, eight years after its debut in Iron Man 3, suggests that Marvel Studios isn't done with it just yet. The idea that Riri Williams' backstory and her development of the Ironheart armor could remain unseen in the MCU provides the perfect opportunity for Extremis to return to the MCU, as its story could also be developed behind-the-scenes, allowing it to appear in projects not related to Iron Man.
