In a dreary smartphone market, Apple Inc. could do something it's never done before.
The consumer-electronics giant has a chance to finish the year as the global leader in smartphone shipments for the first time, according to analysts at Counterpoint Research.Consumers continue to hold onto their smartphones for longer, one reason why the Counterpoint team expects that overall shipments will fall 6% this year, to 1.15 billion units. That would mark the lowest level in a decade.
