TheInspection Review: Elegance Bratton's Drama Doesn't Reach Its Potential
Written and directed by Elegance Bratton, in his feature directorial debut, The Inspection is inspired by Bratton’s own life and the tumultuous relationship he had with his mother. The drama includes a stellar performance from Jeremy Pope, who wears his character’s heart on his sleeve and stands with his head held high despite those who wish to tear him down.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Ellis French is a young, gay Black man who has been homeless for quite some time. He can’t go home because his mother, Inez , has disowned him because he’s gay, which is something she cannot accept. She’s harsh with Ellis when he returns to pick up his birth certificate to join the Marine Corps, and she hopes that his time in service will somehow change the fact he is gay. Ellis has a rough time in boot camp.
Though the film depicts some of the systemic shortcomings of the armed forces, as well as the harshness with which it treats its recruits — and especially its gay soldiers with the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy that was previously in place — The Inspection comes up short. Bratton showcases Ellis’ experiences, but it doesn’t dig deeper into the mistreatment he’s dealt and the system that upholds such behavior.
Where the film shines is when it’s focused on Ellis’ relationship with his mother. To say that Inez has hate in her heart would be an understatement. For every cruel word, Ellis has a kind one. The fact that he stands up to her at every turn shows his resilience and optimism that things will one day change between them. Their final stand-off is powerful, and Union’s performance, though she doesn’t have a lot of screen time, is strong and engaging.
The Inspection had its premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival on September 8. The film releases in theaters November 18. It is 95 minutes long and is rated R for language throughout, sexual content, some nudity and violence.
