The ride was quiet. I attempted small talk, but it came out awkwardly.“This is just as awful as I always thought it would be,” my wife said, holding Maggie as the sedation worked through the dog’s body, eyes glassier, body limper. The last thing Maggie saw and felt was my wife, with whom she shared a deep bond, and then we laid her on the table. The vet told us this was a kind thing we were doing for her.We came home without her. Not a single tail wagged in greeting. Not a bark.
She was the runt of the litter when we first met, a wisp of a pup, last in everything, not quite strong or quick enough to compete with her siblings. Our three kids made a strong case to their hesitant father why a dog — this dog, really — would be a good fit for us.Dogs tell us stuff — the stuff that, to them, is important — and we tell them stuff. No other animal in this teeming world communicates with us the way a dog does.
And so a dog settles, very naturally and easily, into the rhythms of a house. It feels like they’ve always been there, and always will be. Soon a toddler, he would sometimes test the front door handle, and Maggie would bark in a special tone, just for him, letting us know she did not approve of what was happening. It was years before he could leave the house on his own without her raising the alarm — one special bark, and one special pitch.
