Houston Zoo event to offer tips on how to save migrating birds during peak season
Migratory birds are making a 17-hour nonstop flight over the Gulf of Mexico, and Houston Zoo is sharing how to help protect these winged wanderers on their journey.
May 13 is World Migratory Bird Day, in which the zoo will celebrate from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Kathrine G. McGovern Texas Wetlands area, where guests can engage in bird-saving activities. In May, up to 2 billion migratory birds pass through Texas on their way up north. The birds en route to Houston are searching for food, water and places to rest before going further up north. The birds include species like the olive-sided flycatcher, eastern wood-pewee, Traill's flycatcher, magnolia warbler and Blackburnian warbler, according to theThe zoo notes small actions can have big impacts.
