The House of Tiny Treasures, which opened in 1992, is a day care and preschool for children ages 2-5 and their families who are experiencing homelessness. More than 1,000 students have been served since the school opened.

rianna Gilbert twirls across the wood floor inside of the House of Tiny Treasures in Third Ward and lets out a sweet giggle.

On the wall behind Arianna is a painted collage of marigold and ruby-red flowers with the words of Helen Keller: “All that we love deeply becomes a part of us.” The school provides play and speech therapy, transportation to and from the facility and healthy meals. The school follows the Reggio Emilia educational curriculum, which centers on the interests of the child. At the entry, there’s a table stacked with diapers, formula, wipes, shoes, clothing and other basic supplies for any family in need of the items.Marie D.

A caseworker at a shelter helped Gilbert apply for the House of Tiny Treasures, which is free for children and families experiencing homelessness. The school’s mission is to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness by providing stable child care and early childhood education for families. The average cost of day care is $600 a month, according to a MarketWatch study, but many day care facilities cost well over $1,000 a month.

Bailey says she started working at the facility after graduating from college and soon discovered she knew little about the experience of homelessness.
