Following the April 3 approval of a Presidential Major Disaster Declaration for Monterey County, many services have been in place to assist with the Pajaro flood relief efforts.

One item unlocked by the declaration was funding by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Tiana Suber, FEMA media relations specialist, said nearly 300 people have visited the disaster recovery centers in Watsonville and Felton since they opened.

Monterey County Communications Coordinator Maia Carroll cautioned that some people might try to pose as FEMA inspectors to try to take advantage of disaster victims and asked how people can be aware. Suber said genuine inspectors will wear FEMA badges, will not ask for money during the inspection and will only show up by appointment.

Kevin Cox of the Hope Crisis Response Network promoted an event Saturday to clean up the mud that has accumulated under Pajaro residents’ homes. The “Mud Out” will give volunteers an opportunity to remove the mud. Volunteers are asked to bring their own shovels, pressure washers and wheelbarrows and arrive 8:30 a.m. at the Hope City Command Center trailer at Pajaro Middle School, 250 Salinas Road, Pajaro. From there, they will go to 65 homes to get to work. Personal protection equipment will be provided, and there will likely be a free lunch.
