There is one mistake in The Goonies' ending that takes on a different meaning when viewed with the knowledge of one of the movie's deleted scenes.

The Goonies is a classic family movie from the ‘80s that remains hugely popular today, yet it features several mistakes that are the result of behind-the-scenes decisions. The majority of these errors are due to certain scenes being cut from the final version of the adventure movie, which leaves some lines of dialogue making no sense and feeling out of place.

There are several hilarious quotes from The Goonies that transform the movie from a simple family drama into a timeless comedy classic. Many of these lines were actually changed or altered to fit the version of the movie that exists after going through post-production. However, due to the fast-paced nature of some scenes, it was impossible to fix some lines without reshooting the entire scene, which resulted in some confusing pieces of dialogue.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The Goonies' "Octopus" Line Is A Movie Mistake In the final scene of The Goonies, reporters surround the movie's child protagonists and ask them all about their adventures, which they’re more than happy to talk about. However, viewers paying close attention will hear Data telling one reporter about “the octopus," when no such animal made an appearance in the story.

Although the octopus scene was removed from the final cut of The Goonies to make room for more noteworthy moments, the fast-paced dialogue of the final moments meant that the line had to stay. It would have been difficult to remove this single line without disrupting the momentum of the entire scene, but luckily, the dialogue took up a completely different meaning in light of Data’s character.

It’s an unintentional joke that actually makes the scene even funnier, and cutting the octopus scene resulted in it being even more hilarious than it would have been had the bit not been cut. Data is one of The Goonies’ best characters, always causing harmless trouble and having fun with his friends. Therefore, it makes complete sense for him to be the one lying to the journalists and telling tall tales of octopuses at the end of the movie.
