Defining what's healthy is more complicated than you might think.
to update the definition of"healthy" foods, while laying out guidelines that products would need to meet in order to use the term. The goal: to bring the definition more in line with"current nutrition science," the FDA said, while"empowering consumers" to be more informed about their food and encouraging manufacturers to produce more nutritional food.
Per the proposed guidelines, in order to use the"healthy" label on food packaging, products would have to: "Contain a certain meaningful amount of food from at least one of the food groups or subgroups recommended by the"Adhere to specific limits for certain nutrients, such as saturated fat, sodium and added sugars," which would be set as a percentage of the daily value of each nutrient.
The FDA said that new guidelines would open the door for foods like nuts, seeds, some oils, higher-fat fish like salmon, and water to use the"healthy" label. The organization is also looking into developing a symbol for placement on food products that would identify foods as healthy.
