“They're isolated on different plots of land by themselves or maybe with one or two other homes,” Strader said. “What that means is they're 20, 30 minutes away from the nearest shelter. So, if the warning is 13 minutes away, and you're 20 minutes away from your shelter, it's the middle of the night. You have two kids, you have to get them out of bed. Your car may not want to start… just start stacking up.
“Where we see a lot of issues come into play with tornadoes is the anchoring of the home to the ground is either insufficient or it fails – or there's just something lost in translation from the time that home is built to the time the home is installed and that creates a deadly scenario,” he said. The environmental side involves how strong the tornado is, what's happening in the atmosphere and where and when it hits.
"What we’ve learned is that when you think about disasters, they’re really societal at heart people don’t like to hear that.”
