'The 2022 election will be remembered as one of the most important runoff elections in the history of the country and possibly the world,' says writer Chantal James on the recent election in Brazil.
Still traumatized from Jair Messias Bolsonaro’s unthinkable 2018 victory, we considered riding out Sunday’s election at home—like Buddhist monks—quietly meditating on his defeat. But it was too much pressure, so instead we grabbed some candles and headed to a party in Santa Teresa, a bohemian neighborhood in Rio, to gather.
For the last four years, the country has been entrenched in a battle for democracy that culminated in last Sunday’s election victory for leftist President, known colloquially as Lula. As cheers erupted and firecrackers exploded across Brazilian cities—a celebration that could have been mistaken for a soccer match victory—60 million Brazilians, including our small gathering in Santa Teresa breathed a momentary sigh of relief.
This is a sobering moment for all Brazilians as they come to terms with a country that is divided and dangling over an abyss . Bolsonaro will be gone on January 1, but his legacies will remain. To save Brazil we need a new Brazil: one that prioritizes social inclusion, equality, visibility, and dignity for all Brazilians. We need a Brazil that addresses its colonial past and legacies, especially slavery and the genocide of Black and Indigenous populations. A Brazil that reflects the diversity and complexity of its citizens. When Brazilians cast their vote for president Lula they were choosing the country’s greatest hope for transformation.
