The Batman 2 won't make the same mistake other Dark Knight sequels have made, says Matt Reeves. '[...] Suddenly other Rogues Gallery characters come in, and they kind of take over, and then Batman takes a backseat sort of character-wise or emotionally.”

The Batman 2 director Matt Reeves explains how the upcoming sequel will avoid a Bruce Wayne problem that other Dark Knight movies have had. Released ealier last year to strong reviews from audiences and critics, The Batman introduces Robert Pattinson's take on the Caped Crusader. The film sees Pattinson's hero forming a tentative alliance with Catwoman to take down the Riddler after a series of attacks on the city .

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Following his recent comments affirming that he and Mattson Tomlin are hard at work on The Batman 2 script, Reeves now reveals in an interview with Collider that the upcoming sequel will avoid a past Dark Knight sequel mistake. Without going into too much detail regarding what he and Tomlin are cooking up, Reeves assures fans that the movie won't lose sight of Bruce Wayne as the emotional core of the story being told.

“To me, the thing that I really feel is that I also believe that Rob [Pattinson] is so special in the role. My goal has always been to do these point-of-view stories that allow the character to always be the emotional center of the story. Because a lot of times what happens is, after you do the first one, then suddenly other Rogues Gallery characters come in, and they kind of take over, and then Batman takes a backseat sort of character-wise, or emotionally.

When it comes to villains, Reeves' sequel has a number to choose from. Although only briefly glimpsed in the theatrical release of The Batman, a subsequently-released deleted scene fully introduces Barry Keoghan's Joker, Riddler's Arkham cell neighbor. It's possible that the sequel will see the Joker escape his prison to serve as The Batman 2's main villain, but Reeves could also take the movie in an entirely different direction.

Many questions remain about The Batman 2, but Reeves comment affirms that Pattinson's character will remain the emotional focal point of whatever stories are yet to come. Reeves comment doesn't, however, rule out a larger than life villain or the return of Kravitz's Catwoman, who was a big hit in the original film. With Reeves still in the writing stage, it will likely be quite a while before fans find out more concrete information about what he has planned in The Batman 2.
