It’s a delightful irony that 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan has spent two years attempting to remodel a Super Bowl contender in his image, only to find himself stuck with the exact same Super Bowl contender he already had. Hiscurrently have sole possession of first place in the NFC West, which was once a monster division but now looks more underwhelming with each successive week. They also have the second best net point differential in the NFC, behind the Eagles.
And f—k their division, too! The NFC East is currently the hottest division in football, but that means nothing in early October. The Giants are still led by a 3-D printout of Eli Manning at quarterback, and the Cowboys are coached by a man who makes every decision like he’s just been in a traffic accident. Elsewhere, the only winning team in the NFC South is the Bucs, whose quarterback is about to become the main character.
No team over the past three seasons has proven better suited to capitalize on filling such a void than San Francisco. The Niners haven’t beaten a winning team all season, but what NFC team has? They also suffered the ignominy of losing to a Denver team that doesn’t even know how to tie its cleats. But I’ve been through all this before with Kyle’s crew.
Not only would winning the NFC tie Kyle’s hands — and not in a fun, kinky way — but it could potentially affect how other teams approach their own QB situations. Come February, the Niners won’t be able to trade Lance for anything more than a pint of melted ice cream. Just look at every QB trade from this past offseason: all of them, disasters. Russell Wilson has been helpless with the Broncos.
