A boss shouldn’t get to tell you what you can say, how you can settle a dispute or who you can go work for next year.

Big news for American workers: The Federal Trade Commission just proposed to ban an oppressive rule that employers bury in the small print, in that pile of papers you often sign on your first day on the job.

It’s the clause in an employment contract that says something like, “If you work for us, when you quit, you can’t work for any of our competitors for a year.” If you purchase a product or register for an account through one of the links on our site, we may receive compensation.
