The public university holds some of the lowest graduation rates in Texas: By 2022, 7 percent of first-time freshmen who arrived in 2018 had graduated in four years, 26 percent who started in 2016 had graduated in six years and 33 percent of community college transfers from 2018 had graduated in four years, TSU data show. Around 55 percent of first-time freshmen in 2021 returned for their sophomore year.
Nationally, HBCUs play a critical role in producing graduates. While HBCUs make up only 3 percent of the country’s colleges and universities, they enroll 10 percent of all African American students and produce almost 20 percent of all African American graduates, according to the United Negro College Fund.
