We worry about the chilling effect. This is not an insignificant concern given the police intimidation that some older Texans remember from the Jim Crow era and the movement today to manipulate what should be neutral election bureaucracies to achieve partisan goals.

This may sound reasonable enough, but we have seen the secretary of state’s office used as a political tool. There was the disastrous voter roll purge in 2019 that unfairly targeted naturalized citizens and that Gov. Greg Abbott and other Republicans initially publicized as proof of widespread voter fraud. There were also the 2020 election audits by the secretary of state’s office targeting only Dallas, Tarrant, Collin and Harris counties that found some irregularities.

Hall claimed that people being allowed to vote at more than one precinct makes it impossible to ensure an accurate vote count, according to the Tribune. There is no evidence that is true, and plenty of evidence, years of data in fact, that it is false.
