Texas Republicans appear poised to sweep statewide offices, extending 28-year streak
Comptroller Glenn Hegar and Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller also cruised to their third terms over Democratic opponents Janet Dudding and Susan Hays. And Railroad Commissioner Wayne Christian easily defeated Democrat Luke Warford, keeping the three-member body — which regulates the state’s oil and gas industry and natural gas utilities — under unanimous Republican control.
At the bottom of the statewide ballot, Republicans kept unanimous control of Texas’ top civil and criminal courts. Incumbent justices Debra Lehrmann, Rebeca Huddle and Evan Young won their Texas Supreme Court races, while incumbents Scott Walker and Jesse McClure returned to the Court of Criminal Appeals.
Many Democrats were already bracing for a disappointing night in the weeks leading up to the election, with poll after poll showing Abbott, Patrick and other statewide Republicans up at least several points. Republicans expressed confidence about their chances in the days leading up to the election, though they sought to temper expectations, with Patrick saying his race was actually “relatively tight, 5 to 7 points,” after one poll found Republicans up double digits.
