AUSTIN — The rumors rose from curious whispers to a full-blown crescendo Jan. 18 when Gary Patterson, the longest-tenured and most-successful coach in the history of TCU football, was spotted with Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte during a men’s basketball game at the Erwin Center.
This week, the program Patterson led to 181 wins, 11 bowl titles, six conference championships and six Associated Press top-10 finishes is coming to town. And No. 7 TCU is rolling under first-year coach Sonny Dykes. Texas does not make Patterson available to the media. But the Longhorns have all praised the 62-year-old assistant as being a sort of roving library of football knowledge, a chatty encyclopedia happy to offer knowledge to anyone who crosses his path in the facilities.
The former three-star Frisco Dallas recruit has emerged as arguably the conference’s best defender this season. And he put together another award-worthy performance last Saturday to help No. 24 Texas down No. 13 Kansas State in Bill Snyder Family Stadium.
