Texas midterm elections: Explaining the Land Commissioner, Railroad Commissioner and Agriculture Commissioner
The State Board of Education is a group of 15 elected officials, who are unpaid volunteers, headed by a chairperson selected by the governor and confirmed by the state senate.The board sets policy for Texas public schools and oversees the investment account shared by all public schools in the state.One of the most significant issues the board deals with is approving charter school applicants.
Additionally, the board writes the school curriculums used by public schools in the state. This year, there’s been much debate over . Republican political leaders, especially, have sounded the alarm over “Critical Race Theory” in schools and want to restrict how social issues and history are discussed by teachers in class.Under intense pressure from conservative activists, the board ultimately decided to wait until 2025 before making a final decision on the future of the state's social studies curriculum. The board will instead take up Texas' mathematics curriculum next year.
On curriculum, Democrats generally push for more inclusivity, information about climate change and less of a focus on Christianity in the standards, while Republicans are concerned about what they view as more progressive ideology creeping into public schools.There are four State Board of Education races in the Houston area, but only two of them are expected to be very competitive.
