Infielder slumped in his third season with Longhorns and will look to finish elsewhere.
AUSTIN — After three seasons, two trips to the College World Series and 189 games in burnt orange, Texas shortstop Mitchell Daly has decided to continue his baseball career elsewhere.
Daly broke out as a freshman All-American and All-Big 12 first-team second baseman in 2021, batting .316 with 35 runs scored, 31 RBI and eight stolen bases. He remained the starting second baseman in 2022 but his batting average plummeted to .237. Daly seemed to be trending back toward his freshman form, batting .290 through mid-March and around .260 in early April. But the infielder tumbled into a prolonged slump and was eventually removed from the starting lineup during the closing stretch of the regular season.
He clubbed a game-tying solo home run in Texas’ 4-2 win over Louisiana in the first game of the Coral Gables Regional and went on to hit .277 with two home runs, one double, four RBI, three walks and six runs scored in six postseason games.
