During the 2021 quorum break, Democrats spent thousands on private flights out of Austin and on hotels in Washington. Beto O’Rourke, who later ran unsuccessfully for governor, helped raise more than $600,000 to help with those expenses. Given that some Democrats left Austin for about six weeks in 2021, they would have each accumulated about $20,000 in fines if the rule had been in effect.
