Reed was condemned for the 1996 killing of 19-year-old Stacey Stites. Prosecutors say he raped and strangled Stites as she made her way to work at a supermarket in Bastrop, a rural community about 30 miles southeast of Austin. “Mr. Reed’s conviction and death sentence violates the most central tenets of our Constitution and cannot stand," Pucher said in a written statement. "We will continue to fight for Mr. Reed’s freedom and bring him home to his family.”
