The Texans are signing tight end Jordan Murray, an undrafted free agent who played at Hawaii and Missouri State, a person with knowledge of the transaction said Wednesday.
Murray played four seasons at Missouri State, an FCS program where he logged 99 catches for 1,196 yards and 11 touchdowns before transferring to Hawaii. He played in 13 games for the Warriors and caught 10 passes for 70 yards. Murray gathered attention at the Tropical Bowl, and his 6-5, 240-pound frame lends to the all-around profile of tight ends in the offense newly hired Texans play-caller Bobby Slowik learned as a passing game coordinator with the 49ers.
The Texans now have seven tight ends under contract, a number that will certainly shrink after the team enters training camp. General manager Nick Caserio landed a considerable upgrade at the position by signing Dalton Schultz to a one-year, $6.25 million contract, and while Schultz is expected to be the main passing target, the Texans are expected to use several multiple tight end formations in both running and red-zone situations.
