More than 1,300 Texans fell prey to romance scams in 2022, with losses totaling $60.3...
Ranked second in the country behind only California, scams in Texas reflected a larger trend nationwide, according to the study by Social Catfish, a reverse search technology company. Americans lost a record $1.3 billion in the scams last year, a 138 percent increase from 2021.
Another key finding is that highly populated states ranked at the top of the study, but smaller states like Arkansas , New Mexico and Maine saw the biggest increases in year-over-year losses. Many scammers pretend to be celebrities on social media, the study read. One person Social Catfish interviewed said they sent money to a fake Nicolas Cage, while another was nearly duped into sending $400,000 to a pretend Keanu Reeves to “help him finance the ‘John Wick’ movie,” the company said.
Promises to teach people how to invest is the second most common lie told by scammers, according to Social Catfish, accounting for 18 percent of scams.
