Texans draft LSU's Derek Stingley Jr. at No. 3: What to know
After Jacksonville and Detroit stayed true to form with the first two picks of the draft, the Texans pulled a surprise and took LSU cornerback Derek Stingley Jr.Lovie Smith said cornerback was a priority and Stingley is considered best corner in the draft and strong in man-to-man coverage. After a pair of outstanding seasons to start his LSU career, Stingley missed all but three starts in 2021 with a foot injury. Per NFL.
He's well-suited for a variety of zone coverages but needs to play with much better zeal and toughness in run support. Stingley will likely measure and test like Marshon Lattimore, Patrick Peterson and Antonio Cromartie , but he needs to find that breakthrough 2019 form in order to reach his potential as a lockdown cover talent.Considered a prototypical cornerback and one of best athletes in this clas. Has long arms and anticipates well on out-breaking routes and looks to undercut.
