Harlan’s Lathan Skrobarcek returns the ball Wednesday, April 12, 2023, during his UIL Region IV 6A tennis championships semi-final match against Reagan’s Jon Totorica at the NEISD tennis center. Skrobarcek won 6-4, 6-1.That’s the best way to explain how he managed to fight off five match points in an intense third set to win the Region IV-6A boys singles championship and secure his second straight UIL state tournament berth.
“You can never count me out,” Skrobarcek said. “Being an underdog, I always fight no matter who’s in front of me.” Skrobarcek didn’t back down while facing top seeded Marko Mesarovic of Round Rock Westwood for the regional championship on April 12 at Blossom Tennis Center. After taking just one game in the first set, Skrobarcek rallied to win 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 .
“Just heart, I guess,” Skrobarcek said of staying competitive while he was on the brink of losing the match. “I’ve worked hard, and I knew it would come out eventually. So, I stayed with it throughout the good and the bad.”
