Mikaiil Hussein's lawsuit alleges he was walking down Fairmount Avenue when officers abruptly stopped him at gunpoint, forced him to kneel and handcuffed him
The president of a San Diego taxi drivers’ union sued the San Diego Police Department on Thursday in U.S. District Court, alleging officers detained him at gunpoint without reason last year as he was walking to work.
It accuses the officers of violating several of his constitutional rights, using excessive force and falsely imprisoning him. It also accuses Nisleit and other unnamed police officials of not properly training officers.A police spokesperson did not respond to an email Thursday seeking comment on the lawsuit and details of the June 14 stop that led to the suit.
“He was taking pictures of himself and enjoying a peaceful stroll on the public walkway,” his attorney, Emily Howe, wrote in the lawsuit. Hussein wanted to record the officers, according to the lawsuit. But because they were immediately pointing their guns at him, he instead put his hands in the air to show he was unarmed.
