Every seafood restaurant in San Diego touts the freshness of its seafood, but perhaps none can boast better proximity between fish and plate than Brine Box, which opened this month at the end of the Oceanside Pier.

Waite spent much of his childhood in England, so he said he has “no excuse to make a bad fish and chips.” My fish & chips plate was prepared with fresh-caught halibut that melted in my mouth, and the fry was light, crispy and not greasy. The peas, with a touch of cream, had a grassy, fresh-picked flavor and the English-style tomato-based curry sauce is richly flavored but not spicy. A plant-based protein can be substituted for the seafood in the dish.
