Bell is performing with the orchestra this weekend on Jean Sibelius' violin concerto
Until recently, Joshua Bell had never worked with new Houston Symphony music director Juraj Valčuha. But it’s a small world.
“I remember playing for his 50th birthday,” he says. “I think he’s around 80 now, and he was younger than I am now, which is a weird thought for me at this point. And I’ve come regularly ever since and always loved the orchestra.” “The first movement is one of the most exciting endings of [any] first movement; it’s extremely visceral and athletic,” Bell says. “The slow movement has got this emotional depth, and then the last movement is this almost primeval dance that is unlike anything else in the repertoire. It’s just got everything.”
Bell is also a passionate advocate for arts education, a byproduct of his upbringing. His parents introduced him to the violin at age four, with his mom sometimes accompanying him on piano. By 12, he was studying with esteemed Indiana University professor Josef Gingold, who himself had been a pupil of Eugene Ysaÿe, the early 20th-century Belgian virtuoso who was a favorite of Debussy, Saint-Saëns, and César Franck.
