Summit County is planning to add a ring of fiber optic cables to boost internet access for fire, police, EMS and government agencies. Summit County announced Friday plans to create a $35 million broadband network meant to improve internet speeds for first responders and local governments.
The high-speed internet will be used to help police, fire and EMS. A $22 million data center that’s part of the project will help store and backup government information, said Summit County spokeswoman Greta Johnson. “The American Rescue Plan Act has granted Summit County a once in a lifetime opportunity to make targeted investments in local infrastructure. In addition to funding critical water and sewer projects, ARPA funds are empowering us to position our county for the future,” Summit County Council President Elizabeth Walters said in the release.roughly seven times faster than the 2021 average
The first phase of the publicly owned broadband network, which includes both the fiber optic network and a data center, is meant to boost internet speeds for public safety and governments. Summit County expects to build the data center with $22 million in General Capital Improvement Funds, according to the news release. Both are projected to be operational by 2025.
