besties at first sight for the two principal characters in “Summer, 1976,” a warm and beguiling memory play by David Auburn starring Laura Linney and Jessica Hecht, portraying women recalling their friendship as young mothers who grow close during the time period of the title, despite their initial antipathy.

Directed with his customary sensitivity by the veteran Daniel Sullivan , the play does in fact have the languorous but appealing vibe of a sleepy summer, initially uneventful, but with accumulating undercurrents of emotional complexity as Diana and Alice gradually open up to one another. Not incidentally, Mr. Auburn’s play gives Ms. Linney and Ms.
