A weekday morning text message I send out sparked such varied and thoughtful responses that I’ve gathered a bunch here, hoping to keep this civil discussion going.

I didn’t send a text about it, but yesterday’s story about the Cleveland Catholic diocese rules for teachers and students on LGBTQ issues brought text messages from people offended by or in support of it. One argument is that children’s brains aren’t fully formed, so they need their parental their guardrails to know what is going on in their lives. Another argument is that some parents are so intolerant that they can do permanent damage by rejecting their children if they know such details.

Moreover, it is not the Church’s job or mission to acquiesce to the demands or values of secular society. The good news is that Catholic school and church attendance is wholly voluntary. Children and parents who disagree with the Church’s laws and catechism can choose a different school and a different church. It’s a free country.

The issue is that the Catholic Church believes that homosexuality or changing one’s biological gender is a sin. Thus, they are prohibiting the church and its schools from allowing or supporting this conduct.
