A guaranteed income program in Los Angeles County will soon open applications to former foster children that will give recipients monthly payments of $1,000 for two years.
The program, titled Breathe, will select 200 applicants to receive these payments over the course of two years. The window for this application will open on June 20 at 6 a.m., and will close on July 3 at 11:59 p.m.The program selected 1,000 people last year to receive $1,000 every month for three years, and now the program is adding an additional 200 people, who will receive the same amount every month for two years.
To be eligible for this new application window, an applicant must be at least 21 years old and must not have turned 24 before Sept. 1, 2023. Additionally, applicants must be a former Los Angeles County Department of Children and Families foster youth who was in care on or after their 18th birthday. Other requirements applicants need to meet include having a household income at or below 100% of the area median income for a single-person household or 120% of the area median income for a household of two or more persons. Applicants must also have been negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and not be currently enrolled in another guaranteed income program.
The University of Pennsylvania and other local and national research partners will conduct a randomized control study to measure the outcomes of this project. While participants are not required to participate in the research study to receive the $1,000 monthly payments, those who do will be asked to provide information periodically on different aspects of their overall health and well-being and will receive a $30 gift card for every survey they complete.
