Stefano Pilati has collaborated with the French custom furniture company Pinto on a sculptural chair and couch.
from their paper-bag waist. No surprise, then, that his first foray into furniture design with Pinto, a Paris firm specializing in one-of-a-kinds and limited editions, is more akin to sculpture than your average couch or chair.
“The volumes are massive, almost like a church,” Pilati explains. “Everything looked tiny, the volumes overwhelmed any object to the point that I preferred nothing more than something that didn’t fit. Then I put a carpet on the side of the sofa and after I put it on the chair. It was quite simple, but very effective. What I liked, because it was a material that was quite rigid, was that you could mold it, and everything became quite sculptural.
The chair will be produced in a run of 8. Each one will go for €45,000. The couch, made from a sand-colored cotton, linen, viscose, and silk blend, is easier to produce, so more can be made by private order, but it too is unique. In Sicily, in view of the sea, natural materials like rattan, straw, and bamboo are quite common, but not when Pilati gets his hands on them.
